Service door, fire door, counter shutter or grille?
They look related because they are: a curtain that coils on a barrel above the opening and runs in guides at each side. What separates them is the job they are tested and built for, and they are not interchangeable.
- Rolling service door
- The everyday steel curtain for security and weather at a working opening. It is not a fire door and carries no fire label. Series 300, 400, 400HP and 600.
- Rolling fire door
- A labeled assembly for an opening in a fire-rated wall. It closes automatically when a fusible link melts or a detector or alarm releases it, and it is designed to be drop-tested and reset. Series 500 and 500i.
- Counter shutter
- A smaller-profile curtain for counters and pass-throughs. The 700 is for security and finish. The 550 is the fire-rated version for openings where the project specifies a rating, and a 700 is not a substitute for it.
- Rolling grille
- An aluminum curtain that secures an opening while people can still see through it and, with the open patterns, air can still move. Open grille patterns do not form a weather-sealed closure. Series 800 and 800HP.

Service doors
Commercial slat door
300 Series
The straightforward commercial slat door for freight, warehouse and general industrial openings. It pairs roll-formed guides with a chain hoist as standard, and the curtain ships from the factory already assembled on the drum.
- 3 inch steel slats in 24 or 22 gauge, flat or curved profile
- ASTA's brochure lists Model 324 (24 gauge) to 16 ft x 16 ft and Model 322 (22 gauge) to 12 ft x 12 ft

Heavy-duty rolling service door
400 Series
The step up when the opening is bigger, works harder, or needs choices beyond the 300: heavier gauges, stainless or aluminum, high-cycle springs, a pass door or an impact-certified configuration. Structural steel guides and an enclosed hood are standard here rather than upgrades.

High-performance rolling service door
400HP Series
A steel service door for openings that cycle constantly. Instead of counterbalance springs, a direct-drive operator runs a springless barrel with soft start and soft stop, and the curtain opens faster than a conventional rolling service door.
- Opening speed up to 24 inches per second and closing up to 12 inches per second, per ASTA's brochure
- ASTA rates the standard system at 400,000 cycles, with an upgrade to 600,000 available
- 22 gauge flat slats in galvanized steel (422HP) or stainless steel (422SHP); brochure lists both to 14 ft x 20 ft

Worth knowing: the cycle figure is a design rating. The manufacturer's written warranty is limited by time or cycles, whichever comes first, so it is not a promise of service life.
Insulated rolling service door
600 Series
Think of it as the 400's build with an insulated curtain. Each slat is a steel face and a steel back with polyurethane foamed in place between them. It is the service door to look at when one side of the wall is heated or cooled and the other is not.
- Flat front slats in 24, 22, 20 or 18 gauge with a 24 gauge back slat; stainless models available
- Foamed-in-place polyurethane core; ASTA states an insulating value of R-7.2 for the slat
- ASTA's brochure lists an STC rating of 24 with its guide and header seals

Fire-rated doors and shutters
The required rating comes from your plans, your code official or your insurer. We quote what is specified; we do not choose a rating for you. Size, gauge, mounting, label and operation all have to be confirmed together for a rated assembly.
Rolling fire door
500 Series
For a full-size opening in a fire-rated wall. Day to day it works like a service door. In a fire it closes on its own: a fusible link melts, or a smoke detector or the building alarm trips a release device, and the door closes automatically.
- Published ratings: 45 minute, 1-1/2 hour and 3 hour, with 4 hour available in 18 gauge only
- 3 inch steel slats in 22, 20 or 18 gauge; stainless steel models available
- Mounts to steel, concrete or masonry (filled or hollow block); between-jamb mounting is an option
- Chain hoist operation with a fusible link kit is standard; listed fire door electric operators are available
- Auto-reset design for drop testing, on both chain hoist and motor operation

Insulated rolling fire door
500i Series
The same fail-safe closing as the 500, with an insulated curtain for a rated opening that also separates temperatures. The ASTA 500i insulates its slats with semi-rigid mineral wool behind a steel backer.

- Flat front slats in 22, 20 or 18 gauge with a 24 gauge steel backer and semi-rigid mineral wool insulation

Fire-rated counter shutter
550 Series
When the project specifies a fire rating for a counter or pass-through opening, the 550 is ASTA's counter-scale fire shutter: small slats, a compact hood, and automatic closing like the full-size fire doors. The final listed assembly is confirmed against the rating your project calls for.
- Published ratings: 3/4 hour and 1-1/2 hour
- 22 gauge flat slats with a 1-1/2 inch profile, in painted steel or stainless steel
- ASTA's brochure lists sizes up to 12 ft wide x 8 ft high
- Closes when 165°F fusible links melt, or from smoke detectors or the fire alarm through a release device
- Push-up or hand crank operation; slide lock, steel endlocks, enclosed hood and bottom seal standard
- Option: UL-rated jamb brush seal and flame baffle

Counter shutters and grilles
Counter shutter
700 Series
A finished-looking closure for counters people see every day. The small slat and compact hood need little headroom, and most sizes simply push up by hand. Choose it for security and appearance where no fire rating is called for.

- ASTA's brochure lists sizes up to 14 ft 4 in wide x 10 ft 4 in high; limits vary by material and model
- Manual push-up is standard through 10 ft 4 in wide; crank operation above that

Worth knowing: the 700 carries no fire rating. If your project specifies a rated counter opening, see the 550 Series.
Rolling grille
800 Series
Security you can see through. The 800 locks an opening while merchandise stays visible and air keeps moving, which is why it shows up on storefronts, parking structures, schools and hospital corridors. The curtain comes in open and closed styles, so decide how much visibility and airflow you actually want.
- Five curtain styles: straight grille, brick grille, perforated aluminum, solid aluminum or polycarbonate panels
- Maximum width 24 ft and maximum height 12 ft 6 in, depending on total curtain area
- Operation by hand, crank, chain hoist or electric operator
- Mounts face of wall or between jambs; clear or black anodized finish

Worth knowing: solid aluminum and polycarbonate curtains trade away the airflow of an open grille, and open grille patterns do not form a weather-sealed closure.
High-performance rolling grille
800HP Series
The grille for an entrance that opens for every vehicle or every shift. It uses the same springless, direct-drive approach as the 400HP, applied to an aluminum grille curtain, so a busy parking or facility entrance is not held up by its own security.

Worth knowing: the 800HP is offered as an open grille. The solid and polycarbonate curtains belong to the standard 800 Series. The cycle figure is a design rating, not a warranty of service life.

What to measure before you ask for a quote
Exact numbers make for a faster, tighter quote, but do not let a missing measurement hold you up. Send what you have and tell us what you do not.
- Opening width and height. The clear opening, in feet and inches. Measure width in more than one place if the jambs are out of plumb and give us the smallest.
- Headroom. From the top of the opening up to the lowest obstruction: ceiling, joist, duct, sprinkler line or light. The coil and hood live here.
- Sideroom, both sides. From each edge of the opening to the nearest wall or obstruction. Guides, the chain hoist or the operator need it, and the two sides are rarely equal.
- What the door mounts to. Steel, masonry, concrete or wood, and whether it will sit on the face of the wall (inside or outside) or between the jambs.
- Power at the opening. For a motor, the phase and voltage available, if you know them.
- How hard the door works. Rough open and close cycles per day, and whether the opening is interior or exposed to weather.
- What the plans say. Any fire rating, wind-load design pressure or product approval called out in your drawings or specification.
Questions that come up
300 or 400: which service door do I need?
Both are non-insulated steel service doors. The 300 uses roll-formed guides and 24 or 22 gauge slats, and it covers ordinary commercial openings economically. The 400 moves to structural steel guides and an enclosed hood as standard, adds 20 and 18 gauge, stainless and aluminum, and lists options such as high-cycle springs, a pedestrian pass door and Miami-Dade impact-certified configurations. If the opening is large, busy, exposed or specified in detail, start with the 400.
When is the 400HP worth it over a motorized 400?
When the door runs constantly. A conventional rolling door is counterbalanced by springs that have a cycle life, and it moves at a conventional pace. The 400HP removes the springs, runs on a direct-drive operator at up to 24 inches per second opening, and includes photo eyes and a light curtain as standard. For an opening that cycles a few times a day, a 400 with a motor is usually the sensible answer.
500 or 500i?
Both are labeled rolling fire doors with the same automatic closing. The 500i adds a mineral wool insulated curtain for rated openings that also separate temperatures. ASTA's current brochures list a 4 hour option only for the 500, and only in 18 gauge. Your plans decide the rating; we confirm the buildable size and label for it.
550 or 700 for a counter?
It depends on what the project specifies. If your plans or code official call for a fire-rated closure at the counter opening, look at the 550, and we confirm the listed assembly for that rating. If there is no rating requirement, the 700 offers more materials, including clear anodized aluminum, and a larger size range. A 700 is not a substitute where a rating is required.
800 or 800HP?
The 800 is the versatile grille: five curtain styles and hand, crank, hoist or motor operation. The 800HP is a motor-only, springless open grille built for entrances that cycle all day, such as parking structures. If you want solid aluminum or polycarbonate panels, that is the standard 800.
Can I get a quote without final measurements?
Yes. Check “measurements are not available yet” on the form and tell us what you know. We can discuss series and options and give direction on budget, then firm it up when the opening is measured. Final pricing always depends on confirmed dimensions.
What colors and finishes are available?
It varies by series. Steel slat doors are typically offered in white, gray, tan and galvanized, with powder coat colors available; several series add stainless steel, and the counter shutters and grilles add anodized aluminum. See ASTA's color chart (PDF) and tell us your preference on the form. Screen colors are approximate.
We are in a high-wind area. Are these doors wind-rated?
Some configurations are. Wind-load and impact approvals belong to specific tested models, sizes and anchorage, not to a whole series. Give us the design pressures or the approval your jurisdiction requires and we will confirm whether a tested configuration covers your opening. A ZIP code alone does not establish compliance.
What about warranty, price and lead time?
All three depend on the configuration, so you will not find blanket numbers on this page. Your written quote states the price and current lead time, and the manufacturer's limited warranty documents state the coverage that applies.
Does sending the form place an order?
No. It is a request for a quote and nothing more. Nothing is built or billed until you approve a written quote. Shop drawings and order approval come later, in writing.
