About Garage Door Springs

Springs are the most stressed component of any garage door. They support the entire weight of the door through every cycle, and when one breaks the door stops operating safely. American Garage Door Supply has stocked replacement springs for residential and commercial doors for over 38 years, with same-day shipping on most common sizes from our Bemidji, Minnesota warehouse.

Torsion vs. Extension Springs

Most modern residential and commercial garage doors use torsion springs, which mount horizontally on a shaft above the door opening. Older homes and some single-car garages use extension springs, which run alongside the upper track on each side of the door. The two types are not interchangeable. If you are unsure which type your door has, look above the door first. That is where torsion springs live.

Things to Know Before You Order

  • Measure your spring in its relaxed (unwound) state. Loaded measurements will be incorrect.
  • For torsion springs, measure three things: wire size, inside diameter, and overall length.
  • For extension springs, identify the color code on the spring and your door height (7' or 8').
  • Wire size and inside diameter are critical. Use a caliper for best accuracy.
  • Length tolerance for torsion springs is roughly half an inch. Close enough is fine.
  • Most residential doors use a pair of springs (one left-wound, one right-wound). Commercial doors may use 2 or 4.
