About Extension Springs

Extension springs stretch alongside the upper horizontal tracks of your garage door, one on each side. They were the dominant residential spring type until the early 2000s and are still common on older homes and single-car garages. Each spring is rated for the weight it can lift, and that rating is encoded as a painted color using the standard DASMA color code.

How to identify your spring

  • Easiest: match the color. Your existing spring is painted a specific color that corresponds to its weight rating. Use the picker above to match it.
  • If the color has worn off, measure the spring at rest (unwound from the door). A 7' door uses a 25" spring with 42" of stretch capacity. An 8' door uses a 27" spring with 48" stretch.
  • If you can't measure the spring, weigh your garage door using a standard bathroom scale (door disconnected from the opener). The pound rating you choose should match the door's weight.

Things to Know Before You Order

  • Springs are sold individually. Order 2 to receive a pair.
  • We strongly recommend replacing both springs at once even if only one has broken. They wear at the same rate, and a fresh spring next to an old one creates an uneven balance.
  • Color codes repeat every 100 lb. A 100 lb spring (Tan) and a 200 lb spring (also Tan) look the same. Use door height plus color together to be certain.
  • Most extension springs are rated for roughly 10,000 cycles (one cycle is one open and one close).
  • Always install with safety cables. Extension springs can recoil dangerously when they break. Cables are sold separately and are inexpensive insurance.
